Nintendo's Game Boy definitely dominated the handheld market for years and years, but Sega (as always) really wanted to create a superior experience.
They certainly stepped up when it came to hardware: A full color, backlit screen. A wider, easier-to-hold form factor. 8 bit console power in a portable unit. However, when it came to the games, Nintendo still held a ton of top-notch hits, and Sega could only sell about 8.5% of the total units Nintendo did with their Game Boy. Even though that was the case, Sega absolutely outsold any other handheld that tried to compete in the same space.
One last note - You know Sega's 8 bit machine, the Master System? That was basically a console version of the Game Gear. The code of their respective games are practically interchangeable!
Special items included: Unreleased titles, prototypes, English-patched translations, multipacks that contain games not in the set, titles in Master System compatibility mode, and games not in English that are easy enough to play without being fluent in another language.
Items removed: Non-working dumps, duplicates, prototypes or demos of games that eventually saw a full release, homebrew titles, multipacks that only included games already in the set, titles that require proficiency in another language to play, and hacks.
Release notes: Master System compatibility mode - There are a handful of games that run in "Master System compatibility mode," which means they are essentially full Master System games. They play natively on a Game Gear unit, but a few limitations happen, including resolution change and pixels simply being dumped off the screen.
These titles are included in an .sms format, and you can best emulate them -as- Master System games: "Castle of Illusion, Starring Mickey Mouse," "Cave Dude (Prototype)," "Fantastic Dizzy," "Jang Pung II," "Olympic Gold," "OutRun Europa," "Predator 2," "Prince of Persia," "R.C. Grand Prix," "Rastan Saga," "Street Hero (Prototype, Rev 2)," "Super Kick Off," "Super Tetris," "Taito Chase H.Q.," "The Excellent Dizzy Collection," and "WWF Wrestlemania: Steel Cage Challenge."
