In the '80s, when we wanted to game while outside of the house, we basically
only had two options: Arcades or little handheld LCD screen devices like the
Game & Watch series or craptastic throwaway Tiger Electronics titles.
Then, in 1989, Nintendo changed our lives forever with an exciting alternative
called the Game Boy. It had practically the same power as the Nintendo
Entertainment System (minus the colors and the way games animated on a crisp
TV screen), but it could fit in your pocket! What an absolute no-brainer.
Tetris was taking the world by storm, and that sucker was included with every
Game Boy handheld, which was a crazy power play. Data later showed us that the
Game Boy, regardless of its name, attracted more female players to the
community than ever before (at least half of its user base). An absolute ton
of solid games were released for it. The build quality was like a fucking
brick and it was nearly impossible for kids to break without trying really,
really hard or running it over with a M1 Abrams tank.
It completely changed our gaming history and defeated every single competitor
for years and years to come, especially when Nintendo introduced slimmer,
crisper, color-screened versions later on in the lifecycle.
Special items included: Unreleased games, prototypes, English-patched translations, and titles not in English that are easy enough to play without being fluent in another language.
Items removed: Regional duplicates, prototypes or demos of games that eventually saw a full release, and titles that require proficiency in another language to play.
